Mainstream Ever After?

8:24 pm PHT

Driving home a while ago listening to 99.5 RT, I was shocked to hear the unmistakable opening bars of Bonnie Bailey’s “Ever After.” Huwaaaat?!? Since when did that song get into RT’s primetime playlist? On a Monday night? (Not that I’m complaining.)

Well, if there’s a song from the underground clubbing/dance music scene worthy of going mainstream, that song would be it. You only need to read the comments on my review of an Anton Ramos CD to know what I mean.

Then DJ Blobb explained why he played that song: He missed hearing it last weekend. Kala ko na…

Oo nga. I heard the song again on Magic this morning on the way to church. Sobrang gasgas na nga yung song.

Local house music fans have been enjoying it since January. It seems it’s only now that it is entering the consciousness of the general public.

Part of me is happy that many more people are enjoying this song. Part of me is selfish because you don’t want many more people to enjoy the song, if you know what I mean. ;)

Now I’m horrified. I searched Technorati and there are a lot of Filipinos raving about this song, and some looking for lyrics.

This blogger hit the phenomenon right in the head. The song is living up to its name!

A little more research turns up the following: The song is #16 on Magic 89.9; it’s been there for two weeks now. The song entered the 99.5 RT Top 40 last July 2 and has reached it’s highest at #12 (but there’s no Top 40 record after July 23, so I can’t be sure). And its currently the top song on Yes 101 FM. :D

Haha.

I first heard this song from Travis’ set and Toy Armada’s also. It’s a nice thing that it went na sa radio, it only means that there is a space na for house music not just on weekend air and clubs. Hooray to house at sana matapos na and nakarinding arenbi at hip hop on air. Let house rule MAINSTREAM nman. :D

benj, while at first it seems nice that “Ever After” is getting more airtime, it’s not a good thing. It only means that people like the song in particular, and not house/trance/techno/chillout music in general.

That song’s popularity is getting out of hand. I heard it more times on the radio this week than on my music collection. (And I even heard it as someone’s ringing tone). The worst offender is 99.5 RT (palibhasa RT yung pangalawang pinakamadalas kong pakinggan pagkatapos ng Jam 88.3).

The best way for a music genre to become more popular is for a lot more songs to get more airtime, not just a single song. And for electronica/dance music in particular, more clubs apart from Embassy, Halo, MDC, Bed, etc. should open, and more events like the ones Big Fish promotes should be held.

Finally, there’s nothing wrong with “hifhaf en arenbi.” A lot of the nice house music are remixed versions of R&B/hip-hop music. Whitney Houston’s “Try It On My Own,” Eamon/Frankee’s “F**k It”/"F**k You Right Back,” Kina’s “Girl From the Gutter,” and Heather Headley’s “I Wish I Wasn’t” are some examples that come to my mind right now.

This blog post seems to be the mecca for all Bonnie Bailey “Ever After” fans, especially the ones looking for the correct lyrics. It seems improbable, but it appears that Bonnie Bailey herself commented on that blog post.

I used to like this song a lot.. but its popularity really got out of whack. 4 months ago I stayed a bit away from it when I heard it in a bar at malate we stumbled into where there are paid girl performers to dance onstage. no nudity, but I still found it cheap. I detested it when it was used for dance performances at local weekend variety shows.. I know I have to get rid of this selfish, elitist attitude towards good music, but I really can’t help getting disgusted with the exaggerated POPularization of the song.

Hello Everyone!!! I cruise the google search engine at times with my name to see what is going on in the rest of the world. Just found a Music Video for ’Ever After’ which I have ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with. But it’s lovely to see all the lovely comments here and I do appreciate all the love it’s recieved from you guys. I love clubbing as well and it does sadden me a bit when my fav club trax get blown up into radio. It takes away from the mystery of it, so I do truly understand. On the other hand…this is my first track to make the radio and coming from my own perspective its beautiful to see so many embrace it. That song is very close to my heart. I’m at www.friendster.com

Have met so many fans from Manila. I hope I get to do a tour out by all of you!!!

look, we should not argue if the song if too old to be included in the charts.. there are too few filipinos that can appreciate techno and trance songs.. I myself is a fan of safri duo, paul van dyk, dj tiesto and the others, and they have great music that never been a hit in the philippines.. so if a song like ever after hit the local chart, we should be happy about it.. at least we have now the same taste as those of our club hoppers in singapore..

Bonnie, hey thanks for visiting my site. I think this music video is the one you’re talking about. It’s made by a friend of a friend of mine. Very cute, and appropriate for the song. :)

dj royex, as I’ve said, I’m happy that many people like this song. What I don’t like is the fact that people like the song on its own, not just because its in a particular genre. We should make more effort to promote electronic dance music like trance, house, and techno. A single song, especially if its popularity goes out of hand, just does not cut it.

Everyone, if you have a Friendster account, you might want to check out the Friendster profiles of Bonnie Bailey and Kaskade. Add them up as friends or just be their fans. :)

i agree, this may be somewhat selfish but… come on. it’s just a shame that such a good song’s some hit that’ll die down after rocketing the charts. it ain’t no pop song.

and oh the video sucks. big time.

Well I think this song is one heck of catchy, great song that hit the local airwaves. Because of its greatness, it opened doors for more Filipinos to appreciate the genre, and not to mention we are starting to acquire new taste in music. We shouldn’t be selfish about and we shouldn’t blame anybody. It’s music. It has to be shared and appreciated.

Hey, I agree. I hate it when a good track/song gets repeated over and over the radio for no sooner it’ll fall in the mainstream. Everybody will soon sing it, and it loses its novelty, which no fan of the song would like to happen. But really, I loove “Ever After” the lyrics of the song is just so magical and the beat, it rocks my world! (Was that really Bonnie who commented there? Cool. Haha.)

I fell in love with the song eversince i bought the Chillout Project House Sessions CD and would never have thought Ever After would get this mainstream. To a point, it does lose its novelty when you hear it all the time but i’ve been in China for 2 months now and hearing the song reminds me of home, of good conversations and Boracay. Its sad though that when i meet people who are so into this song, and i start talking about house or electronica, i get blank stares.

I’ve been hearing reviews of the Ever After music video and would like to see it for myself, if anyone could send me the video, would appreciate it much. mainedee@gmail.com

Lastly, fell upon your weblog once surfing for Anton Ramos and now for Bonnie Bailey and i’d like to commend you for having such a great weblog, very interesting and yet very simple.

I went for a vacation to the Phil. this December and when I was out clubbing the first time I remember hearing this song played like it’s the party anthem and I know I’ve heard it before. I realized that it was in one of my Hed Kandi albums that I bought the year before. I find it great that more people get to appreciate music like this. It doesn’t matter if the masses like just “this” one song, what matters is that this song is opening doors for this genre. My 2 cents!

I had this song in one of my Hed Kandi albums, i liked it back then but when I went on a vacation to the Phil. last December. I hear this song a lot in the clubs and the effect it had on the clubgoers is very infectious. After hearing the song it took me awhile to realize that I heard of it before and seeing the effect it had made me appreciate the song more. In fact hearing this song is gonna be the one that will remind me of my vacation to the Phil.this year. The video was an awesome piece of work, my wife think it’s cute. She thinks the bears were a cute touch plus the storyline was very cute. Hey I’m not a romantic but this video brings out that teen-ager butterfly in your stomach feeling. Good job!
