It really seems like Google is an engineer’s dream place, that is if you can hurdle the tough hiring procedures. Read this post by Philipp Lenssen about insider looks into the world of Google.

Some points that caught my attention:

• Google has one “monolithic source control system.” Wow. In my work, we have something similar but this only applies to just one division of the mother company.

• “We don’t have to, or want to, be micromanaged to death.” Hear, hear!

• “…But on my team everyone owns their own tests and handles their own quality.” I’m troubled by this, especially if your in charge of a really complex project module.

• “The company’s structure, at least for engineers, is amazingly flat.” It goes to show that most engineers can’t be motivated by positions. Money, maybe yes, but not positions.

• “I was told a story about an IT guy who decided to give his wife a full VPN (virtual private network. —ed.) login to the Google network. I should point out that his wife was a Yahoo employee.” That’s really stupid.
