May 2007 Groovee Playlist™

2:02 am PHT

Since I’ve been creating lists of music that I currently like, I’ve decided to create a name for these kinds of posts. (See the ones for March 2007, December 2006, October 2006.) Hey, it’s difficult trying to find relevant or witty titles for light-reading posts like these so these particular music posts will now be called “Groovee Playlists.” You say it’s corny? As I said, I’m not witty. :D So on to the list.

  • “Because Of You” by Ne-Yo. Two of Ne-Yo’s previous singles, “So Sick” and “Sexy Love,” were included in my older lists, so it’s probably not surprising that I’d take a liking to Ne-Yo’s latest single. It’s really quite catchy.

  • “Makes Me Wonder” by Maroon 5. Finally! The makers of such hits like “She Will Be Loved,” “Must Get Out,” and “This Love” will be releasing their second album and “Makes Me Wonder” is the first single off of that. The song is pure pop, but it has the same catchy beat as Ne-Yo’s “Because Of You.” I’m actually surprised that the song is supposed to be a political commentary against the U.S. War in Iraq.

  • “Girlfriend” by Avril Lavigne. Wow. Skatergirl has shorn off her punk rocker persona and released an all-out pop song in the vein of the 80’s Toni Basil song “Mickey.” I heard the Japanese version and found it hilarious.

  • “Faithfully” by Judy Torres. This Journey cover was released way back in 2005, but I first heard it, I think, last December and only recently was I able to discover what the song is. I think it’s a good house version of the original, which is quite good in itself.

  • “Sophia” by Nerina Pallot. Nerina’s got a really beautiful voice and it shines in this song, which has been getting increased airplay in Jam 88.3.

  • “Last Request” by Paolo Nutini. When I first heard this song, I thought it was by James Morrison. Well, it sound like something Morrison would sing, although in retrospect, Nutini’s voice is a little too nasal to be Morrison. Still, the song is a nice low-key ballad.

  • “Starz In Their Eyes” by Just Jack. I have trouble classifying this song. It seems to be pop but the addition of the dance four-to-the-floor drum pattern and synthesized music makes me think it’s also a house song. Anyway, whatever it is, it’s captivating.

  • “Just Say The Word” by Josh Kelley. Nice slow pop/rock-acoustic song, though I like the studio version better than the live acoustic one.

  • “Steer” by Missy Higgins. Nice uplifting song from the girl that gave us the hit “Scar.”

  • “My Humps” by Alanis Morissette. How can you not be amused this Black Eyed Peas-parody? Even the video itself (linked above) is hilarious. My officemates and I keep amusing ourselves during lunch by singing parts of the song. :)

How about you, which songs are you listening to right now?

You got Mariah on your iTunes? Wehehe. Most of her songs that I like were her earlier ones. Well, I have a broad taste in music. And just because something is popular doesn’t mean that I shouldn’t like it. I tend to like songs because I personally like them and not because others do or don’t. :P
